Our ongoing youth and women economic empowerment projects are:

Dairy Farming

Picture: Dairy cows owned by Malanga Women Group; a project started by SDFA-Kenya and the group in 2009.

We are helping set up a dairy farming venture for Malanga Women group. The group were able to purchase 1 cow from the savings on kerosene, and SDFA-Kenya bought 1 other. The group feeds the cows and sell the milk produced, to buy food and other items.

We hope the dairy project will expend, as the cows produce and with access to financing from a local micro-finance institution. We have trained the women on micro-enterprise, project management and basic accounting  to help them manage the project well.

Poultry Projects

By partnering with women groups, youth groups and community based organizations, SDFA-Kenya has helped set up economic ventures, by cost sharing with the groups. The groups save part of the money they initially used for kerosene, and SDFA tops up, and helps in logistic support.

We support Youth and Women groups by giving them day old chicks and start up feeds. The groups then take day to day care of the chicks until they mature. Once the layers start laying, the group divides the eggs equally among the members who can sell or use for food.

The project has been very successful and sustainable in Nyanza and Western provinces and we hope to expand it to other areas in Kenya.

Sugarcane Project

We are providing funds for youth groups to lease land and purchase fertilizer for sugarcane growing. We also educate the youth on how to expand the venture.

We are currently supporting two youth groups, with a sugarcane plantation of over 10 hectares.
