Use Solar, Save Lives

Our "MwangaBora" Solar Powered Lanterns are helping poor rural communities to stop using kerosene, and thus help in reducing climate change, improve education standards in the rural areas, reduce respiratory diseases, reduce risk of fires and reduce hunger and starvation.

To realize social and economic development goals there is the need for sustainable affordable and reliable forms of energy because energy is one of the most important drivers for modern economic development

Kenyans in rural areas heavily rely on kerosene for lighting. Kerosene is the most popular source of power for lighting with 96% of households using it as the main power source. The drivers towards selection of lighting devices to be used are cost and availability. A solar powered lantern is the most preferred devise as it is cost effective but unfortunately it is not available.

More than half of the Kenya’s over 37 million people are poor, and 7.5 million of the poor live in extreme poverty. Therefore the aim of this project is to provide simple, clean, durable and affordable solar powered lanterns to Rural constituencies.

We design and make the Lanterns and distribute them to poor house holds in rural areas.

The metal frame of the Lantern is made from scrap metals, which helps in reducing pollution.

We are also using Mini Solar modules which are recycled from thrown away solar pieces by large solar manufacturing companies, hence also reducing pollution.

Objectives

· To Improve living standards of the population residing in Rural constituencies. This is being achieved by enabling them set up economic ventures, from the money initially spend on kerosene.Click here to learn about the economic ventures we have helped to set up.

· To Reduce carbon emissions and thus reduce climate change.

· To Improve the overall health of the population residing in Rural constituencies.

· To Improve the educational standards of school going children of the Rural constituencies.

· To Improve the awareness of environmental effects of kerosene use in the Rural constituencies.

· To Build up information unit and database centre on the impact, acceptability, effectiveness and sustainability of the project

Purpose

The purpose is to address the lighting needs, economic, environmental, social, educational, and health problems, afflicting the population residing in Rural constituencies as a result of kerosene use for lighting by providing accessible, affordable and quality solar powered lanterns and availing information with regard to the lighting needs of those residing in Rural constituencies.

HOW YOU CAN HELP

1. Donate to help us produce lamps

Donate towards the cost of production of the lanterns. Each lanterns cost USD 20 to produce, with USD4 of this going directly to our volunteers, who come from very very poor families. This helps them cater for their families basic needs.

You can adopt by donating from your credit card through using the Donation Button at bottom of page, through bank transfer or check.

For bank transfers, checks and deposits, email us for details.

Please note that donations are processed through AlertPay. It is the most secure online payment solution.  We cannot receive funds in Kenya and most other African countries through PayPal.

2. Help us set up Economic Ventures for communities who receive the lamps.

The communities save part of the money they initially used for kerosene, and we top up and also help them with logistic in setting up an economic venture. They can then use the proceeds from the economic venture sponsor more lamps or to expand the venture or to set up new ventures. The ventures include farming, small businesses etc.

We need your financial, material and logistic support. Email us for any inquiries.

3. Purchase lamps to help us subsidize the lamps for the very poor

You can order lamps from us at a cost of 30 USD each. For every 2 lamps you order, we make 1 extra lamp for FREE distribution to the very poor.

To order the lamps, email: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it stating your details, the number of lamps needed and the recipient's contacts.

4. Help us Set Up a Modern Workshop for production of the Lamps.

Currently, we are fabricating the metal frames in a leased open space, with no equipments at all. Our volunteer artisans are using crude tools. We do not have adequate space for the assembly of the lamps, since we have converted SDFA-kenya's kitchen into a small workshop for assembly work.

The workshop shall also act as a resource center for helping informal artisans produce high quality products for sell in the local market. This shall go a long way in reducing poverty and creating employment to youth, especially those in urban slums.

We welcome material and financial help to achieve this.

5. Help us acquire a vehicle to transport the lamps

You can help by donating funds form this or by donating a truck/vehicle which we shall use for transportation of the lamps to rural areas.
